Why feedback forms get ignored, and how to fix the part that matters

Most feedback forms fail after the submit button, not before it. Here is how to make sure what people write actually reaches someone who can act.

Every product has a feedback form. Very few products have a feedback process. The form is easy; what happens after someone clicks Send is where it breaks.

The pile problem

Feedback arrives in one pile. A bug report from a paying customer sits next to "love it!!!" next to a SEO agency's pitch. Someone is supposed to read the pile. They do, for a week. Then a launch happens, and the pile becomes a place where feedback goes to die.

The fix is not a better form. It is sorting.

Sort before you read

Imagine every message arrived already labelled:

  • Bug (something is broken)
  • Feature request (they want something new)
  • Question (they need help)
  • Praise (they are happy, and you might quote them)

and the urgent ones, the ones that say "I'm blocked" or "we're losing money", were flagged. Reading the pile becomes triage that takes two minutes, and the bugs can go straight to the people who fix bugs.

Route it where work happens

Once responses are sorted, routing is a rule, not a chore:

  • Bugs → the engineering channel or issue tracker.
  • Feature requests → a tag, reviewed monthly.
  • Praise → a "testimonials" tag for marketing.
  • Spam → nowhere.

The point is not automation for its own sake. It is that the person who can act sees the message while it is still fresh.

The form itself

Since the sorting happens on your side, the form can be short. Three fields is plenty:

  1. A topic select (so people who want to categorise can).
  2. A message.
  3. An optional email, for follow-up.

Widgev builds this in one sentence and sorts every response on arrival, from what the person wrote rather than from the dropdown they picked. See the feedback widget page for the exact wording to start from.
